Microsoft business strategy, innovation, and turf wars

Confessions of a Microsoft employee: Microsoft was dysfunctional, and hurt by poor strategies and turf battles. As someone looking on at Microsoft from a distance, here’s my favorite quote from this story:

“The company as a whole seemed more and more focused on chasing competitors into any business where they might someday present a threat — which to me always felt like ego on the part of SteveB [CEO Steve Ballmer]”

That statement sums up my feelings about their approach to business.

22M Bush-era emails found

December 15, 2009 Leave a comment

Wow, 22 million Bush-era emails have been found. Here’s a blurb from the NPR news story:

“It appears that 22 million e-mail messages from the Bush administration have been restored, as part of an extensive recovery effort associated with several lawsuits. The Bush White House had blamed a faulty electronic-archiving system for the lost e-mails.”

I think this is a good thing, because I don’t think a government can just say, “Oops, we lost that information.” That sounds a lot like those Richard Nixon tapes accidentally getting erased.
